Self-Help Housing

Self-Help Housing offers a unique opportunity for first time home buyers* with a moderate income to fulfill their dreams of owning their own home.

Our standard homes are 3 or 4 bedrooms, 1 to 2.5 baths, and an attached two-car garage.

Families who qualify work together to build a group of 5 to 7 homes per project. The self-help method requires a definite commitment of family time and energy from participants. This is an important responsibility. Each family is required to work a minimum of 30 hours per week for approximately 7 to 10 months to complete the project.

Self-Help Housing projects are now available in Lewis, Cowlitz and Clark Counties. Financing is provided by USDA Rural Development and local lending institutions.

Key Advantages of our Program

  • 100% Financing
  • Equity in your home, when you move in
  • Step-by-step Construction Supervision
  • LOW UTILITY COSTS because homes are built to NW Washington Energy Star Code requirements.

Credit Report
We do need to check each applicant’s credit. We can run a credit report through our office  (there is a charge, or if you have a current credit report, you can bring it in for us to use.)

Type of work required of each family
An on-site Construction Supervisor will teach family members to build their homes from the foundation to finish. No previous construction experience needed but it will require physical manual labor.

For information and an application, call 360-425-3430 ext. 222 or 1-800-893-8311 ext. 220, and ask for Self-Help Housing.

*First Time Home Buyers are defined as someone who has not owned a home in the last three years.
